International Insertion

Internationalization of the Program

In parallel with the strengthening of national insertion, the Program has an action plan to increase internationalization, which is still incipient. The majority of permanent faculty members have some type of partnership with universities or companies abroad, with the potential to attract financial resources for joint projects. One of the PC members is from a foreign HEI, a partnership that resulted in the joint registration of software related to a Program dissertation. Some PTs participated in international events related to technological innovation, technology transfer, and university-company partnerships, contributing to the national and international strengthening of the PPG. Courses in English and the prerequisite that PPG candidates present their projects in English are additional efforts to stimulate internationalization. The HEI has multiple international agreements and cooperation agreements, with the expectation of enrolling at least two foreign students in the next quadrennium.

USP’s Strategic Pillar: Internationalization

Internationalization is one of USP’s strategic pillars, promoting the integration of the academic body with the global scientific community and driving modernization, innovation, competitiveness, and international insertion processes. In recent years, the university has created several Multidisciplinary Research Centers, which bring together different specialties in the search for solutions to complex global-scale problems, in addition to establishing international research laboratories. These Centers use inter- and transdisciplinarity within and outside the University as tools for problem-solving, directly involving USP graduate students and advisors. Among the Centers created, the creation of the Pasteur Institute, which consists of 17 laboratories and has the capacity to house more than 100 scientists, stands out; the creation of a unit of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS); and the creation of the Latin American Medical Mycology Center in partnership with the University of Exeter, United Kingdom. In the last quadrennium, 140 graduate agreements were formalized with foreign institutions. USP also maintains five global dual degree agreements with renowned universities (University of Lisbon in Portugal, Universität Münster in Germany, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in the Netherlands, Institut Polytechnique de Paris in France, and Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen in Germany), which facilitate internships abroad and the obtaining of dual degrees for graduate students throughout USP. In the last quadrennium, 240 students were awarded dual degrees. In the last quadrennium, several internationalization programs benefited the USP academic community. Through the PrInt/PDSE program, 1,276 graduate students, 74 staff members, 3 foreign students were served, and 309 foreign professors were received. Within the scope of the Program to Support Academic-Scientific Missions Abroad (PAME), 620 USP professors were benefited. The Santander International Mobility Program benefited 394 students, while the Future 17 Program served 7 master’s students and 109 doctoral students. Through PROAP Mobility, 15 students were benefited. In addition, the Move La America Program, in the last year, benefited 70 foreign master’s students and 86 doctoral students to carry out part of their graduate studies at USP. In total, USP offered 642 courses in English and 51 in other languages. To support initiatives aimed at internationalization, USP has AUCANI (USP Agency for National and International Academic Cooperation), whose mission is to strengthen the University’s integration with university institutions, public bodies, and society. AUCANI promotes and supports academic cooperation in teaching, research, culture, and extension, both nationally and internationally. FMUSP’s academic cooperation and mobility agreements with foreign institutions can be verified at the link https://www.fm.usp.br/fmusp/internacional/convenios. FMUSP also encourages independent cooperation with researchers from institutions without prior agreements, in projects that may generate future official partnerships, as occurred with the celebration of an official agreement with the University of Cologne, Germany, a process led by a PT of the Program.

Courses in English

COURSES IN ENGLISH: according to HEI regulations, new courses or those undergoing reaccreditation must have a syllabus in Portuguese and English, with encouragement for them to be taught in English. The HEI’s courses taught in English are disclosed in a specific area of the University’s website, at the link https://uspdigital.usp.br/janus/componente/disciplinasOferecidasInglesInicial.jsf. The PPG’s courses have already been reaccredited with a syllabus in English, and we have an action plan for two courses in the next quadrennium to be taught in English.

Faculty Internationalization Activities

The PT’s internationalization activities are in attached documents and show the potential for increasing the Program’s internationalization in the next quadrennium. The majority of Faculty members had international partnerships in the quadrennium and/or participated as members of specialty societies abroad, on editorial boards, or in the organization of international events.
